Lawn fertilization and weed control in Mandeville

The spring pre-emergent has to be down before the crabgrass can start, and here that’s usually late February. The rest of the year follows from your soil test. The program runs on a Platinum membership, so we mow the lawn too, and every treatment lands on a visit you already have.

Platinum memberships from $379 every four weeks.

The treatment year

Weed control is a timing job.

We’re on your lawn weekly from April through October, every other week in March and November, and monthly December through February.

Late February

The spring pre-emergent goes down as the soil comes up through 55 degrees, ahead of the crabgrass. It lands on a winter visit that’s already on the schedule.

April through August

This is the whole feeding window, and your soil test sets what goes out. Spot weed control runs alongside it, and the fire ant mounds get baited while the ants are out.

September and October

Poa annua and the winter weeds come up next. The fall pre-emergent has to be down before they do, and soil temperature back through 70 degrees is the signal. Nothing we treat gets nitrogen after August.

December through February

Broadleaf weeds grow through the warm spells while the lawn sits dormant. Clover, henbit and chickweed all get treated in those three months.

Soil temperature sets the exact weeks, so they move a little year to year. Your service day holds.

What sets the program

Your soil test sets the fertilization.

We take the soil test when we start, and once a year after that. It tells us the pH and what the ground is short of. Often that isn’t nitrogen. A centipede lawn and the St. Augustine lawn next door get different bags on the same morning.

What we watch for

Most of what we treat is zoysia. What takes a zoysia lawn down here is thatch and large patch, and both are easier to stop than to fix. On centipede it’s usually too much nitrogen, and on St. Augustine it’s chinch bugs in the hot strips by a drive. We tell you the day we find any of it.

What the program treats

The spring pre-emergent goes after crabgrass and goosegrass. The fall one is aimed at Poa annua, and the broadleaf that follows it through the winter is clover, henbit and chickweed. Doveweed and chamberbitter come up later and warmer, from May on. Nutsedge and Virginia buttonweed each take their own product. Dollarweed turns up where the ground stays wet.

Not all of these come out with a spray. Some are pulled by hand or taken down with the mower, and which is which depends on the grass you have.

Fertilization and weed control

What people ask first

I already have someone mowing. How does this work?
The lawn health program runs on a Platinum membership, so we take the mowing too. There’s no second appointment and no second company showing up.
When would the first treatment happen?
We take the soil test when we start, and the first application is whichever one the calendar is on. A September start begins with the fall pre-emergent. In June it would be the feeding and the spot weed work.
Can you make my lawn as dark as my neighbor’s?
If yours is centipede and his is St. Augustine, no. Pushing nitrogen at centipede to chase that color is where decline starts, so we don’t do it.
When can kids and pets go back on the grass?
After any treatment we tell you the re-entry time from the label, usually until it’s dry. Kids and pets stay off the grass until then.
Do weeds still come up between applications?
Some do. Doveweed and chamberbitter come later and warmer than crabgrass, and nutsedge needs its own product. Spot weed control is already in the program, so tell us and we treat them on your next visit. Torpedograss and bermuda running through a St. Augustine lawn are the two we won’t promise to get out.
How soon will I see a difference?
Not in the first month. A pre-emergent stops what hasn’t come up yet, so the first thing you notice is what doesn’t appear next season. Thin turf filling back in takes a growing season, and two if the soil test comes back with something real to fix.

Most people who get all of this are paying three companies, one to mow, one to feed the lawn and one to spray for mosquitoes. Platinum is Gold plus the lawn health program, so the mosquito and tick barrier is in it too, on the same invoice.

Send the address and we’ll measure the lawn and send your quote, usually within a day. Larger properties and project work we walk first, and we tell you when to expect it.If you want the grounds without the treatments, Silver starts at $229 every four weeks.
